Sarawak Governor Oversees Oath Ceremony for State Assembly Speaker

KUCHING – The Sarawak State Legislative Assembly marked a significant occasion on 18 November when Tan Sri Datuk Amar Mohamad Asfia Awang Nassar was formally sworn in as Speaker for the 10th term.

The ceremony, held at the Astana Negeri Sarawak in Petra Jaya, was officiated by His Excellency Tun Pehin Sri Dr Haji Wan Junaidi bin Tuanku Jaafar, the Sarawak State Ruler.

The oath-taking, conducted at 4.30 pm, confirmed Asfia’s appointment for the period spanning 16 November 2025 to 15 November 2027.

His Excellency was accompanied by Toh Puan Datuk Patinggi Fauziah binti Mohd Sanusi, underscoring the ceremonial importance of the event.

The proceedings were overseen by Dato Sri Haji Syed Hamzah bin Syed Paie, Senior Private Secretary to His Excellency, who acted as Registrar of Ceremonies.

The event drew attendance from Sarawak’s top leadership, including Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Dr Abang Abdul Rahman Zohari bin Tun Datuk Abang Openg, Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Douglas Uggah Embas and his wife Dato Doreen Mayang, as well as senior government officials, ministers, deputy ministers, and heads of departments.

Among those present were Datuk Amar Haji Mohamad Abu Bakar bin Marzuki, Secretary to the Sarawak Government, accompanied by Dato Hajah Baduyah binti Haji Bujang, and Dato Sri Saferi bin Ali, the State Attorney General.

The ceremony concluded with a prayer recitation led by Dato Haji Mustapha Kamal bin Ahmad Fauzi, Grand Imam of Sarawak.

Following the oath, His Excellency and Toh Puan extended their congratulations to Asfia, expressing confidence in his ability to continue leading the Assembly with distinction.

The appointment reinforces his long-standing role in Sarawak’s legislative history, having first assumed the position in 2000.

Asfia’s tenure is notable for its longevity, making him one of Malaysia’s longest-serving Speakers. Over the past two decades, he has presided over numerous legislative sessions, guiding parliamentary procedures and strengthening the Assembly’s role in governance.

His career also includes service as a member of the National Council, representing constituencies such as Kuala Rajang and Serdeng, further cementing his influence in Sarawak’s political landscape.
