Sarawak Strengthens Support for Chinese Education with RM1.55m Allocation

MIRI – Sarawak has reaffirmed its position as the most committed state in Malaysia to supporting Chinese education, with two private secondary schools in Miri receiving allocations totalling more than RM1.55 million.

The handover ceremonies, held separately at Pei Min Secondary School and Riam Road Secondary School (RRSS) on Tuesday, were officiated by Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Prof. Dr. Sim Kui Hian. SM Pei Min received RM724,549, while RRSS was allocated RM833,890.

Datuk Amar Dr. Sim emphasised that Sarawak’s recognition of the Unified Examination Certificate (UEC) has now reached its 10th year, reflecting the state’s long-term commitment to diversity-based education.

This is not a temporary policy. This is part of the Sarawak state building plan. Education is the foundation of our nation building,” he said.

He stressed that Chinese education in Sarawak is inclusive, open to all Sarawakians regardless of race or background.

The allocations form part of the state government’s RM10 million annual funding for 14 Chinese private secondary schools across Sarawak, making it the only state in Malaysia to provide consistent large-scale financial support for Chinese education.

At Pei Min, Deputy Director of Management Ting Jack Sieng expressed gratitude for the state’s continued assistance, noting that the funds have helped the school provide a safer and more competitive learning environment.

He also welcomed the announcement of Sarawak’s free higher education policy, set to begin in 2026, which will extend benefits to UEC graduates alongside other education streams.

Meanwhile, RRSS Director of Management Dato Sri Law Kiu Kiong described Sarawak’s recognition of UEC as a historic milestone that broadens educational pathways for students. “This policy shows that education is not limited by race, but rather is assessed based on ability and potential,” he said.

The allocations highlight Sarawak’s inclusive approach to human capital development, ensuring that students from diverse backgrounds have equal opportunities to pursue higher education.

The state’s consistent support for Chinese education has been widely acknowledged as a model of inclusivity and long-term planning, reinforcing its role in shaping Malaysia’s educational landscape.
