KUCHING: The “7th Sarawak Tang Soo Do Championship 2026” is set to take place on July 11 and 12 at the 7th Mile Community Hall, bringing together hundreds of martial arts practitioners from across East Malaysia.
Organised by the Sarawak Samarahan Tang Soo Do Association, the championship is expected to attract around 300 male and female participants from various divisions and age groups throughout Sarawak. Practitioners from Sabah are also expected to join the tournament, making it one of the region’s major Tang Soo Do gatherings this year.
The upcoming championship aims to promote martial arts development, healthy lifestyles, and stronger ties among participants from different backgrounds. Organisers said the event will provide a platform for athletes to showcase their skills, improve their techniques, and gain valuable competition experience.
Tang Soo Do, a traditional Korean martial art, focuses on discipline, self-defense, physical fitness, and respect. The association believes such values are important in guiding young people towards positive activities while helping them build confidence and sportsmanship.
In preparation for the event, the Sarawak Samarahan Tang Soo Do Association recently received an RM8,000 grant from Wilfred Yap Yau Sin in support of the championship. The contribution was received by Master Kiu Chiong Inn and Master Thum Mu Lanng on behalf of the association.
The association expressed appreciation for the continued support towards martial arts activities and youth development in the state. According to the organisers, hosting a championship of this scale requires significant funding and cooperation from various parties to ensure the smooth running of the programme.
Apart from the competition itself, the event is also expected to strengthen friendships and exchanges between martial arts practitioners from Sarawak and Sabah. Organisers hope the championship will further raise the profile of Tang Soo Do in the region and encourage more young people to participate in sports and self-defense training.
The championship is anticipated to draw support from families, sports enthusiasts, and local communities throughout the two-day event in Kota Sentosa.
