Sarawak to Build Kobe-Inspired Deep-Sea Port for Economic Growth

Sarawak to Build Kobe-Inspired Deep-Sea Port for Economic Growth

KUCHING (Jan 22): Sarawak is set to make waves with its proposed deep-sea port at Tanjung Embang, modeled after Japan’s renowned Port of Kobe, announced Sarawak Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg.

“We are using Kobe Port as a model. For large ships to access our ports, the sea depth must be sufficient. Therefore, we plan to construct a port in the sea,” he explained.

The Premier emphasized that shallow waters near existing ports, such as the Sarawak River, hinder the region’s ability to accommodate large vessels, limiting trade, imports, and exports.

“Big ships cannot enter shallow waters. This constraint affects our trade capabilities. With advanced technology, we can now think beyond traditional ports and construct one in the sea,” he added.

The deep-sea port, proposed to be located 8km off the coast of Tanjung Embang in waters 15 to 20 meters deep, will also house Petroleum Sarawak Bhd’s (Petros) gas terminal.

Abang Johari further revealed that the deep-sea port would be developed alongside the new Kuching International Airport, forming part of a massive infrastructure initiative estimated to cost RM100 billion.

By enhancing port facilities and accessibility for large vessels, Sarawak aims to position itself as a regional trade hub, bolstering its import-export activities and overall economic growth.
