BINTANGOR – The Sarawak Government has reaffirmed its commitment to community harmony and balanced development through targeted support for both religious institutions and rural infrastructure in Meradong.
Meradong State Assemblyman (ADUN) Datuk Ding Kuong Hiing said the government’s approach reflects its dedication to ensuring that all communities, regardless of faith, benefit from development initiatives.
“The Sarawak government is always concerned about the needs of all levels of society, regardless of religion. Through the Other Religious Affairs Unit (UNIFOR), various assistance is channelled to ensure that non-Muslim houses of worship also enjoy balanced development,” he said during a presentation ceremony in Bintangor.
As part of the initiative, Datuk Ding presented two UNIFOR grants totalling RM147,450 to local churches. The Chin Nguong Methodist Church received RM80,000, while the Lai Ang Methodist Church was allocated RM67,450.
These funds will support maintenance and development works, ensuring that the churches continue to serve their congregations in a conducive environment.
In addition, a Special Grant for Small Rural Projects (MRP) worth RM15,400 was channelled to finance the installation of water meters at Rumah Jerome, Sungai Baron, benefiting 39 households.
Ding stressed that such projects, though modest in scale, have a direct impact on rural living standards, particularly in ensuring systematic and efficient water supply management.
“Small projects like this are very important because they directly improve the living standards of rural residents by providing better basic facilities and ensuring that clean water supply can be enjoyed comprehensively,” he explained.
The allocations form part of the Sarawak Government’s broader strategy to foster unity, inclusivity and social wellbeing.
According to recent state reports, UNIFOR has disbursed RM35.77 million in 2025 alone, supporting over 107 houses of worship across Sarawak, while MRP grants continue to address grassroots needs such as utilities, community halls and rural infrastructure.
Community leaders in Meradong welcomed the contributions, noting that the government’s consistent support for both religious and rural development projects strengthens trust and cooperation between the state and its people.
By combining infrastructure upgrades with social and religious support, Sarawak continues to position itself as a model of inclusive governance, ensuring that development reaches every level of society.
