Speaking at the launch of the programme in Limbang, Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri (Dr) Abang Abdul Rahman Zohari Tun Datuk Abang Openg highlighted that the initiative is not merely political rhetoric but a practical mechanism for engaging with communities and addressing their needs.

He explained that the Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS) administration has rolled out a series of policies designed to benefit citizens directly, including the creation of nine regional development agencies, each supported by an initial RM1.5 billion allocation.

The Premier noted that this decentralised approach enables local issues to be assessed and resolved more effectively, with elected representatives acting as the primary link between communities and government.

He pointed out that the northern areas of Limbang and Lawas hold significant potential to emerge as new economic centres, supported by agencies such as the Northern Region Development Agency (NRDA) and the Highland Development Agency (HDA).

Infrastructure development remains a key priority, with projects underway to deliver world-class roads, bridges, and a more reliable electricity supply. The integration of Limbang and Lawas into the state grid is expected to eliminate reliance on costly diesel generators, which currently amount to RM150 million annually.

“When completed, Limbang and Lawas will no longer depend on diesel generators. This is an important step towards more sustainable energy,” he said.

Among the major undertakings is the Limbang Bridge project, which is anticipated to enhance land connectivity and strengthen economic ties with neighbouring Brunei Darussalam.

The Premier also outlined ambitions to transform Limbang into a low-carbon city, aligning with global efforts to combat climate change. He stressed the importance of adopting clean energy sources such as hydro, solar, and hydrogen to adapt to shifting global economic trends.

Sarawak has already invested heavily in renewable energy, including hydroelectric dams and hydrogen technology, positioning itself as a leader in sustainable energy development. The Premier described hydrogen as a potential energy source of the future, reinforcing Sarawak’s commitment to innovation and sustainability.

Reflecting on the programme’s past achievements, he recalled its effectiveness during the COVID-19 pandemic, when Sarawak pioneered cashless payments through the Sarawak Pay application. This innovation helped maintain economic resilience during a challenging period.

Beyond economic initiatives, the government continues to prioritise social welfare, offering educational assistance and support for repayment of National Higher Education Fund Corporation (PTPTN) loans. “Everything we do is for the future of Sarawak’s children, so that they can enjoy sustainable and quality development,” he said.
