Sarawak’s Historic Move Government Takes Over MASwings, Launches AirBorneo

Sarawak’s Historic Move: Government Takes Over MASwings, Launches AirBorneo

BUKIT BEGUNAN: A new chapter in Sarawak’s aviation history has begun as the state government takes a bold step by acquiring MASwings and rebranding it as AirBorneo. This strategic move highlights Sarawak’s determination to improve rural air connectivity and provide better services for its people.

Member of the State Assembly (ADUN) Bukit Begunan, Datuk Mong Dagang, described the decision as a visionary move by the Premier of Sarawak, Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri (Dr) Abang Abdul Rahman Zohari Tun Datuk Abang Openg. It reflects the state’s high commitment to strengthening the air transport sector, especially for rural and remote areas that rely heavily on these services.

“Sarawak can no longer depend solely on external parties to ensure that Rural Air Services (RAS) run smoothly. This takeover ensures more efficient and competitive access to air transport for rural communities,” said Datuk Mong during the People’s Joint Leaders’ Council held at Gilbert Melina’s House on Friday.

In addition to the announcement, Datuk Mong Dagang also declared several allocations aimed at improving local infrastructure and community welfare. These include:

  • RM6,000 for the Village Development and Safety Committee (JKKK)
  • RM4,000 for the Gilbert Melina House Women’s Bureau
  • RM80,000 under the Rural Transformation Program (RTP) for the construction of a sewerage system behind the longhouse

The event provided a platform for local residents to engage directly with leaders, voicing their needs and aspirations for the development of their areas. Among those present were Lingga District Officer Frank Lani, along with community leaders from the surrounding regions.

This takeover marks a significant milestone for Sarawak, paving the way for improved air services and greater self-reliance in aviation.– UKAS EDITION
