KUCHING: Sarawak’s Melinda Tiong has clinched a gold medal in the women’s lightweight powerlifting category (under 61kg) at the recent championship. Competing with an impressive body weight of 59.90kg, Melinda showcased her exceptional strength by achieving an average lift total of 158.955, significantly surpassing her rivals.
In her impressive performance, Melinda began with a 60kg lift, followed by successful attempts of 61kg and 62kg, culminating in a remarkable total lift of 183kg. This achievement was calculated using the coefficient formula available on the World Para Powerlifting website, highlighting the rigorous standards of the competition.
Claiming the silver medal was Perak’s Aphiradi Singchang, who, weighing 53.60kg, achieved an average lift of 151.591 with a total of 168kg. The bronze medal was awarded to Johor’s Eng Ling Li, who, at a body weight of just 29.70kg, had an average lift of 146.926 with a total of 123kg. Notably, Eng also secured gold in the best lift category, boasting an impressive average of 54.948 (46kg).
While another athlete from Sarawak, Rabiatul Adawiyah, delivered a commendable effort with an average lift of 89.986 (91kg) at a body weight of 42.90kg, she did not manage to secure a medal.
This outstanding achievement by Melinda Tiong not only brings pride to Sarawak but also shines a spotlight on the growing talents in Malaysian powerlifting.
