DEBAK – The Sarawak Government has announced a series of major infrastructure projects for the Saribas area, with a focus on improving water supply, electricity and housing.
Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri (Dr) Abang Haji Abdul Rahman Zohari bin Tun Datuk Abang Haji Openg outlined the initiatives during a Leaders’ Meeting with the People at DUN Level N.35 Saribas.
Water infrastructure is set to be strengthened through an expansion of the Saribas water treatment plant, ensuring that the growing population has access to reliable supply.
The Premier explained that the state is also exploring hydrogen as an alternative energy source, citing its potential cost advantages over diesel.
“Diesel is more expensive than hydrogen. Hydrogen seems to be cheaper than diesel, and we want to use hydrogen. We get hydrogen from water; our rivers have plenty of water,” he said.
Electricity supply will also undergo significant upgrades. The government has approved RM180 million to convert the current single-phase system to a three-phase system across Betong Division, including Saribas.
This improvement is expected to reduce power outages and provide households with a more stable supply.
“The government has approved a project to upgrade the electricity supply to three phases, meaning there will be no more incidents of power outages like before, and it will be implemented starting next year,” the Premier explained.
He added that the upgrade is vital as the use of household electrical appliances continues to rise in line with improved living standards.
Housing development is another priority, with the introduction of the site and services concept. This approach involves preparing lots with essential infrastructure before construction begins, with the government covering costs such as land reclamation and utility provision.
The initiative aims to make housing more affordable and accessible, particularly for families in rural areas. The Premier confirmed that this model will be expanded to Saribas to encourage greater homeownership.
These projects reflect Sarawak’s broader strategy to enhance quality of life while supporting sustainable growth.
By investing in water, energy and housing, the government is addressing key needs of rural communities and laying the groundwork for long-term development.
The Premier’s announcement underscores the state’s commitment to ensuring that infrastructure keeps pace with population growth and economic progress.
The initiatives are expected to have a wide-reaching impact, strengthening connectivity, improving living conditions and supporting Sarawak’s ambition to diversify its energy sources.
With hydrogen exploration, electricity upgrades and affordable housing schemes, Saribas is set to benefit from a more resilient and inclusive development framework.
