SEA Games 2025 Opening Ceremony in Bangkok

The 33rd Southeast Asian Games (SEA Games 2025) officially commenced in Bangkok on Tuesday evening, 9 December 2025, with a dazzling opening ceremony that combined cutting-edge technology, cultural performances, and a strong message of unity across the region.

Held at the Rajamangala National Stadium, the event marked Thailand’s seventh time hosting the Games, returning to the city where the inaugural edition was staged in 1959.

The ceremony unfolded before tens of thousands of spectators and millions watching across Southeast Asia, setting the tone for nearly two weeks of competition involving 11 nations.

The spectacle began with hundreds of drones illuminating the night sky, forming intricate patterns and symbols representing harmony and cooperation.

The stage itself incorporated more than 800,000 litres of water, enabling dramatic flyboard and jet ski stunts that captivated audiences.

Organisers emphasised that the theme “We Are One” was chosen to highlight solidarity, particularly amid recent political tensions in the region.

Thai King Vajiralongkorn formally declared the Games open, underscoring the importance of sport as a bridge between nations.

The loudest cheers of the evening were reserved for Thai K-pop star BamBam, who performed his hit single Wheels Up alongside other local artists.

His appearance drew immense excitement, especially among younger fans, reinforcing the Games’ appeal beyond sport.

Athletes from across Southeast Asia paraded into the stadium, with Singapore presenting its largest contingent to date, 930 competitors across 48 sports.

The Philippines also made headlines as tennis star Alexandra “Alex” Eala, ranked 52nd in the world, carried the national flag alongside volleyball player Bryan Bagunas.

Philippine Tennis Association Secretary General John Rey Tiangco remarked: “Not only does her presence inspire our tennis squads, it also inspires the entire 1,600-strong Philippine delegation.”

The Games, running until 20 December, feature competitions in football, badminton, baseball and dozens of other disciplines, many of which had already begun prior to the ceremony.

For Thailand, the event is not only a sporting showcase, but also an opportunity to reaffirm its role as a central hub for regional cooperation.

As Southeast Asia’s athletes prepare to compete, the opening ceremony has already set a high standard, blending tradition with modern spectacle.

More importantly, it reinforced the idea that sport remains a powerful force for unity, even in times of political and social challenges.
