Sebangkoi Forest Park Tipped as New Ecotourism Hub

SIBU – A previously overlooked forest reserve is poised for transformation into a significant ecotourism destination, following promising findings from a recent scientific survey. Sebangkoi Forest Park, located near the Pan Borneo Highway, has been identified as having considerable potential for development.

The assessment comes after a comprehensive expedition conducted by the Sarawak Forest Department (JHS), which recorded numerous unique species of flora and fauna within the park’s boundaries. These discoveries point to an area of high biodiversity and ecological significance.

Datuk Len Talif Salleh, the Sarawak Deputy Minister of Urban Planning, Land Administration and Environment, highlighted the findings during the Sebangkoi Expedition 2025 Seminar at the RH Hotel. He stated that the results confirm the area’s rich natural heritage and its value for sustainable state development.

“The Forestry Department has taken proactive steps by conducting expeditions in Sebangkoi and as a result, many discoveries of wildlife species, flora and fauna have been recorded,” he remarked after officiating the event. “This shows that this area is very rich in natural treasures.”

Historically, the forest park was managed by the Sarikei District Council and developed by the Sarawak Economic Development Corporation (SEDC). Despite some initial infrastructure work, the site failed to capture significant public interest in its previous incarnation.

In a strategic shift, the Forest Department has now submitted a formal proposal to gazette the area as an Amenity Forest or Natural Reserve. This legal designation would streamline management under a single agency, enabling more coordinated development.

Datuk Len Talif explained that this approach would allow for comprehensive planning encompassing infrastructure, visitor facilities, and ecological interpretation. The integrated development is expected to benefit not only local residents but also attract visitors from across Sarawak.

The deputy minister expressed optimism about the park’s future, projecting that within two to three years, it could become a recreational destination and a point of pride for the Sarikei community. He envisions the site evolving into an important state asset.

The seminar was attended by several key officials, including Sarawak Forest Director Datu Hamden Mohammad and Sarikei Division Deputy Resident Badjuri Bidin. Their presence underscored the cross-departmental support for the initiative.

The development aligns with broader regional connectivity improvements, particularly the Pan Borneo Highway, which is expected to increase accessibility to previously remote natural attractions. This enhanced access could prove pivotal for the park’s success as a tourism destination.
