132 Senior Citizens Benefit from Sejambak Kasih Charity Programme

SERIAN – A total of 132 senior citizens from Kampung Bunan Gega/Punok and nearby areas received charitable aid under the Sejambak Kasih programme, organised in conjunction with the 2025 Christmas celebration.

The initiative, held annually before Gawai and Christmas, reflects the government’s concern for the welfare of local communities, particularly the elderly.

The programme was officiated by Sarawak Deputy Minister of Food Industry, Commodities and Regional Development, Datuk Martin Ben, who is also the Kedup State Assemblyman.

Speaking at the event on Wednesday, Datuk Martin explained that the donations were intended to ease the burden of recipients as they prepared for the festive season.

“This donation is intended to help ease the burden of the recipients in preparing for the Christmas celebrations which will be celebrated on December 25, 2025,” he said.

Beyond the distribution of aid, Datuk Martin reminded recipients and their families to register for the Kenyalang Gold Card (KGC), a scheme designed to provide additional support for senior citizens.

He highlighted that KGC offers several benefits, including death contributions to assist with funeral arrangements and annual medical assistance of RM500 for treatment at private clinics registered with the Social Welfare Department (JKM).

The Sejambak Kasih programme has become a tradition in Sarawak, symbolising inclusivity and care for the elderly during major celebrations.

By providing financial and material support, the initiative helps ensure that senior citizens are not left behind in festive preparations and community life.

Community leaders have welcomed the programme, noting that such efforts strengthen social bonds and highlight the importance of collective responsibility in caring for vulnerable groups.

The event also served as a reminder of the government’s continued commitment to rural welfare and its emphasis on supporting senior citizens through structured schemes like KGC.

For the residents of Kampung Bunan Gega/Punok, the aid provided under Sejambak Kasih not only lightens the financial load but also reinforces the spirit of compassion and solidarity during the festive season.
