Senior Citizen Found Dead While Hiking Near Sankina Water Park, Tawau

Tawau, 5 March 2025 – A 65-year-old man was found dead near Sankina Water Park, Hot Spring in Tawau after he was reported missing while hiking alone in the area. The tragic incident has shocked the local community, especially those who frequent the popular nature spot.

According to Tawau Fire and Rescue Station (BBP) chief Jemishin Ujin, the department received an emergency call at 8.26pm regarding a missing hiker. A team of seven rescue personnel was immediately dispatched to the location, which was about 1.5 kilometres from the main road.

Based on early reports from witnesses, the senior citizen had entered the forest area alone at around 4.30pm. However, by 6pm, he was nowhere to be seen, leading to concern among park visitors. A group of members of the public started a search operation at 7pm, hoping to locate the missing man.

Tragically, the victim was discovered lying unconscious beside a footpath at approximately 8pm. Concerned passersby immediately contacted the Ministry of Health Malaysia (MOH) for assistance.

Rescue team members, together with the public, worked together to carry the victim using a stretcher back to the main road. Despite their efforts, the victim was officially pronounced dead by MOH personnel upon arrival.

The body has since been handed over to the Royal Malaysian Police (PDRM) for further investigation. Authorities are still determining the exact cause of death, but no foul play is suspected at this time.

This unfortunate incident serves as a reminder to hikers, especially senior citizens, to always hike in groups and ensure they are physically fit before embarking on outdoor adventures. Visitors are also encouraged to inform family members or friends of their hiking plans and to carry basic safety equipment like a whistle, flashlight, and first aid kit.

The operation was officially concluded at 8.48pm after the area was deemed safe by the fire and rescue team.
