PM Anwar Highlights Heritage Conservation as Pillar of Sustainable Urban Growth

KUALA LUMPUR – Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim underscored the importance of heritage conservation as a foundation for sustainable urban development during the Seri Negara Conservation Completion Ceremony held this week.

The Prime Minister described Seri Negara as a monument that has witnessed pivotal moments in Malaysia’s nation-building journey.

He emphasised that the preservation of historic landmarks must go hand in hand with technological advancement, ensuring that progress is achieved without compromising national identity, cultural heritage and historical values.

Anwar highlighted that the conservation of Seri Negara, alongside initiatives such as the Kuala Lumpur Heritage Project (Warisan KL), demonstrates the Government’s commitment to revitalising heritage assets.

These efforts, he said, serve as catalysts for economic growth, community empowerment and the strengthening of urban identity.

“This initiative is not merely a physical exercise to preserve historical remains, but part of a broader vision to build a city that is clean, developed, environmentally friendly and soulful,” he remarked.

The Prime Minister stressed that the MADANI Government will continue to ensure that urban development does not result in a “culturally barren” environment.

Instead, the focus will be on creating sustainable, green cities that uphold human values and contribute to the well-being of the people and the future of the nation.

The conservation of Seri Negara is seen as a symbolic step in Malaysia’s wider strategy to balance modernisation with cultural preservation.

By integrating heritage into urban planning, the Government aims to foster a sense of pride and continuity while positioning Kuala Lumpur as a city that reflects both progress and tradition.
