SIBU – The importance of English language proficiency among students has been underscored as a vital tool for broadening access to knowledge and enhancing competitiveness both nationally and internationally.
Speaking at the Bawang Assan National Secondary School (SMK) Appreciation Ceremony, Councillor Kevin Lau Kor Jie, Chairman of the Sarawak United People’s Party (SUPP) Bawang Assan Branch, highlighted the role of English as a global language.
He explained that mastering English not only boosts self-confidence but also enables students to stand on equal footing with peers across Malaysia and abroad.
“When you master English well, you will have more opportunities to gain new knowledge. This allows you to compete not only nationally but also internationally,” he said during the event.
Kevin Lau further emphasised that cultivating a culture of continuous learning is essential to shaping a generation that is both competitive and of high quality. He also praised students who actively participate in co-curricular activities, noting that involvement in associations and sports helps instil discipline and teamwork.
Earlier in the ceremony, SMK Bawang Assan Principal Kong Chiong Hui urged students to use the upcoming school holidays wisely. He encouraged them to engage in beneficial activities and avoid social problems that could jeopardise their future.
“I really hope that all students can fill their free time during the end-of-year holidays with activities that benefit themselves. Avoid activities that are harmful to your health such as drugs or social problems that will affect your future,” he said.
The principal also reminded parents to monitor their children closely during the long break, ensuring that their time is spent productively.
The ceremony recognised schools and students for their achievements, including the GPS SPM Improvement Certificate Award for 2023 and 2024 and the 2024 SPM Saujana Leap Award. Students who excelled in sports and co-curricular activities at the national level were also celebrated, reflecting the school’s commitment to holistic education.
The event served as a reminder that academic excellence, language proficiency, and active participation in co-curricular activities are all crucial elements in preparing students for future challenges.
With English proficiency highlighted as a cornerstone, educators and community leaders continue to encourage students to embrace opportunities that will strengthen their competitiveness in a globalised world.
