SIBU JAYA – A grass fire near the Sibu Jaya Methodist Church was brought under control by firefighters from the Sibu Jaya Fire and Rescue Station after an operation was launched following the discovery of the blaze.
The incident involved an estimated 0.5-acre area of grassland beside the church. Firefighters from the station’s Charlie Team were deployed to the location as part of the response.
The team was led by operations commander PB Jerry Kusau and comprised five firefighters. They travelled to the scene using an FRT Scania fire appliance, registration WTY 7270, from the Sibu Jaya Fire and Rescue Station.
According to the operational report, the incident site was about 2 kilometres from the station. On arrival, the team carried out an initial assessment of the area and identified the grass fire close to the Sibu Jaya Methodist Church.
Firefighters subsequently put on full personal protective equipment before beginning efforts to contain and extinguish the fire. Water from the fire appliance’s tank was used through one hose reel as the main firefighting method.
The operation continued until the affected area had been checked and the fire was confirmed to have been fully extinguished. Firefighters also assessed the site to ensure conditions were safe before concluding the response.
Once the operation was completed, the fire appliance and crew returned to the Sibu Jaya Fire and Rescue Station.
The incident highlights the role of fire and rescue personnel in responding to outdoor fires, where burning grass and vegetation can require prompt action to prevent the affected area from expanding.
Grass fires can spread across dry vegetation, particularly when conditions allow flames to move quickly through adjoining areas. In this case, the firefighters were able to conduct the response using equipment carried by the station’s fire appliance and complete the operation after ensuring the site was safe.
No further operational action was reported after the team returned to the station.
