Betong – A tragic road accident at the P-Turn Skrang area this afternoon claimed two lives and left 11 others seriously injured when a Toyota Land Cruiser collided with a rental van carrying Universiti Malaysia Sarawak (Unimas) staff.
According to the Malaysian Civil Defence Force (APM) Betong, their operations room received an emergency call from the hospital alerting them to the crash. A team consisting of one officer and four personnel, along with a 4×4 ambulance, was immediately dispatched to the scene. The operation was led by Lt. M (PA) Mohd Faizul Bin Johari.
Upon arrival, the team discovered the wreckage of both vehicles. The Land Cruiser had been carrying five people, while the van was transporting eight passengers.
APM spokesperson confirmed that four victims from the Land Cruiser – two men and two women – sustained serious injuries. A baby boy in the vehicle was reported to have suffered only minor injuries.
Meanwhile, in the van, two passengers were pronounced dead at the scene. Four others were critically injured while another two sustained light injuries. All victims in the van are believed to be between 30 and 40 years old.
The APM team rushed one of the critically injured male victims to Betong Hospital for urgent treatment, while the Ministry of Health (MOH) and Fire and Rescue Department assisted in transporting the remaining victims.
The bodies of the two deceased victims have been handed over to the police for further action. Investigations into the cause of the accident are ongoing.
