KUCHING: A small fire broke out at the Food Safety and Quality Laboratory, Sarawak State Health Department (JKNS), Sarawak General Hospital (HUS) early this morning due to a short circuit. However, the fire was successfully controlled by the fire department, preventing major damage to the building.
A spokesperson from the Sarawak Fire and Rescue Department (JBPM) reported that the Operations Centre (PGO) received an emergency call regarding the incident at 5.19 am. Following the call, a team from the Batu Lintang Fire and Rescue Station (BBP) was dispatched to the location immediately.

Operations Commander, PBK I (TBK I) Chaplin Wan, stated that upon arrival, the team found smoke coming from the building that housed the hospital’s Nuclear Department laboratory.

Cause of Fire Identified
Initial investigations revealed that the fire was caused by excessive electrical wiring in the Food Safety and Quality Laboratory. The incident resulted in approximately 10 percent of the laboratory space being affected by the fire.
Fortunately, the fire did not impact the overall structure of the building. Firefighters successfully extinguished the fire using a dry powder fire extinguisher, ensuring the situation was under control.
No Injuries Reported
There were no injuries reported in the incident. Firefighters remained at the scene for further safety checks to prevent any potential re-ignition.
Authorities have advised the public and staff to remain cautious and ensure all electrical systems are properly maintained to avoid similar incidents in the future.
