Second Phase of Smart Classrooms for SJKCs to Begin in 2026

SIBU – The second phase of smart classroom installations for Sekolah Jenis Kebangsaan Cina (SJKC) Bantuan is scheduled to commence in early 2026, extending digital learning facilities to more schools across Sarawak.

Deputy Minister of Public Health, Housing and Local Government, Datuk Michael Tiang Ming Tee, confirmed that the upcoming phase will operate with a budget allocation similar to the first rollout. He emphasised that schools with urgent applications and pressing needs will be prioritised.

Speaking at the Smart Classroom Allocation Handover Ceremony in Sibu, Datuk Michael highlighted the importance of ensuring equitable access to educational technology. He noted that smart classrooms are designed to enhance student engagement, particularly in Science and Mathematics, while promoting interactive digital learning.

He explained that the initiative is part of a broader effort to modernise Sarawak’s education ecosystem, ensuring that students across the state benefit from the same opportunities. “There are still schools that have not received this facility, and we will give priority to schools with the most urgent applications and needs,” he said.

In addition to digital upgrades, Datuk Michael revealed that the installation of closed-circuit television (CCTV) systems is being considered for SJKC Bantuan. This measure aims to strengthen school security and safeguard both students and staff. He stressed that safety remains a top priority, with CCTV expected to provide more effective monitoring of school environments.

The Deputy Minister added that the initiative would also assist schools in protecting assets and managing increasingly advanced learning facilities. He underlined that the integration of security measures alongside digital learning tools reflects the government’s commitment to building a robust and secure education framework.

The smart classroom programme was first introduced to improve teaching efficiency and provide students with access to modern learning technologies. The expansion into a second phase demonstrates Sarawak’s determination to bridge the digital divide and ensure that rural and urban schools alike benefit from technological advancements.

Education observers have noted that smart classrooms, equipped with interactive boards, digital devices and internet connectivity, are becoming essential in preparing students for a technology-driven future. The inclusion of security infrastructure such as CCTV further highlights the government’s holistic approach to education reform.

The second phase is expected to cover more schools statewide, reinforcing Sarawak’s long-term vision of strengthening primary education through innovation, inclusivity and safety.
