SMK Kanowit’s RM49.9m Classroom Project Completed Ahead of Schedule

KANOWIT – The Replacement Construction Project for 18 classrooms and additional facilities at Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan (SMK) Kanowit has been completed two months earlier than planned, marking a significant milestone in Sarawak’s education infrastructure development.

The RM49.9 million project, which began on 14 January 2023, was officially handed over during a ceremony attended by Dato Sri Alexander Nanta Linggi, Minister of Works and Kapit Member of Parliament. He praised the Public Works Department (JKR) for its efficiency in delivering the project ahead of schedule while adhering to quality standards.

“This proves the effectiveness of cooperation between the government, implementing agencies and the community,” he said, highlighting the importance of collaboration in ensuring timely completion.

The new facilities at SMK Kanowit include an Administration Block and an Academic Block housing 18 classrooms. Additional infrastructure comprises a surau, a Design and Technology (RBT) workshop, a computer laboratory, an integrated science laboratory, a chemistry laboratory and two resource rooms.

Beyond academic facilities, the school now benefits from recreational and support amenities such as two playgrounds, a waiting hut, a bicycle shed, a guard house, and essential safety infrastructure including a pump and fire room.

Alexander described the development as “very meaningful” for teachers and students, aligning with the government’s commitment to creating a safer, more conducive and modern learning environment.

During the ceremony, Alexander also presented a RM20,000 contribution to the SMK Kanowit Parent-Teacher Association (PIBG) to support school activities and operational needs.

The event was attended by several dignitaries, including Ngemah State Assemblyman Anyi Jana, Machan Assemblyman Allan Siden Gramong, Khairuddin Bakar, Deputy Secretary of the Development Division of the Ministry of Education Malaysia, Dato Ir. Jasmi Wahab, Director of Construction of the Special Project Team 2 JKR, and Dato Ir. Dr. Balamurugan A. Gopal, Director of the JKR Education Work Branch.

The project reflects Sarawak’s broader push to modernise school infrastructure, ensuring that rural and semi-urban communities benefit from improved facilities. With the early completion, SMK Kanowit is now better equipped to provide quality education in a supportive environment, setting a benchmark for future projects across the state.
