MUKAH – The Malaysian Civil Defence Force (APM) in Mukah responded swiftly to an emergency call on 27 April 2026 after a snake was discovered inside a bird cage at a local property.
The reptile, identified as a ringed snake measuring approximately one metre in length, was reported by members of the public who sought immediate assistance.
APM officers were dispatched to the scene and successfully captured the animal using pinning techniques, a standard method employed to ensure safe handling of snakes without causing harm.
Authorities confirmed that the situation was brought under control quickly, with no injuries or damage reported. The bird cage was secured, and the snake was removed safely from the premises.
The incident highlighted the importance of community vigilance and the role of emergency services in responding to wildlife encounters.
Snake sightings in residential areas are not uncommon in Sarawak, particularly during periods of heavy rainfall when reptiles may seek shelter in human settlements.
Wildlife experts note that ringed snakes, while generally non-aggressive, can pose risks if cornered or provoked.
Public safety agencies continue to advise residents to avoid direct contact and to immediately alert trained personnel when such situations arise.
APM Mukah expressed appreciation to the community for reporting the case promptly, emphasising that early communication allows emergency teams to act effectively.
The organisation reiterated its commitment to safeguarding residents and managing unexpected incidents involving wildlife.
In a statement, APM Mukah reminded the public of its 24-hour emergency hotline, encouraging residents to reach out whenever assistance is required.
The agency also reinforced its motto, “APM Mukah, Nang Steady,” alongside the reminder, “There’s a Disaster, Call APM,” underscoring its readiness to respond to emergencies at any time.
The incident serves as a reminder of the importance of preparedness and cooperation between the public and local authorities.
With Sarawak’s diverse biodiversity, encounters with snakes and other wildlife are part of daily life, making awareness and swift reporting essential to maintaining safety.
Residents in Mukah and surrounding areas are urged to remain cautious, particularly in environments where wildlife may be present.
The Civil Defence Force continues to encourage community members to prioritise safety and rely on professional assistance rather than attempting to handle such situations independently.
For emergencies, APM Mukah can be contacted at 084-872814, a hotline that remains operational around the clock.
