Youth STEM Talent Shines at Sarawak Space Challenge

Youth STEM Talent Shines at Sarawak Space Challenge

KUCHING – A record-breaking number of over 6,150 entries were received for the Sarawak Space Challenge (SSC) 2025, underscoring the vibrant engagement of young people in Science, Technology,

Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) throughout the state. This year’s event has solidified its position as a key driver for nurturing future innovators.

The competition attracted widespread participation from both secondary schools and higher education institutions.

Six secondary schools entered more than ten teams each, while universities such as Universiti Malaysia Sarawak (UNIMAS)Universiti Teknologi Sarawak (UTS), and Swinburne University of Technology Sarawak demonstrated strong involvement.

SMK Merbau Miri earned the distinction of “Most Active School” by registering 53 teams, which included 231 students.

Individual educators were also honoured; the “Most Active Teacher” awards went to Angelina Sii Ai JingHelen Edward, and Teo Fung Yong from SMK Merbau, as well as Adia Nor Naan Abode Rahman from SMK Pujut, for guiding multiple teams.

In the Junior category, the championship was secured by SPACEBOYS from SMK Sacred Heart Sibu. They were followed by Fine Gentlemen from SJKC Chung Hua No.1 Kuching in second place, and Interstellar4 from SMK Pujut Miri in third.

Consolation prizes were awarded to TimeCircle from SMK Tung Hua Sibu and Flying Octopus from SMK St Joseph Kuching.

For the Senior category, CosmicNova from UNIMAS took the top honour. Borneo Nexus from Kuching Polytechnic placed second, and Panggau Libau, also from UNIMAS, came third. Additional consolation recognitions were given to UNIMAS teams Luna and Delta V.

A notable achievement was the progression of teams from rural localities, including Kapit, Limbang, Lubok Antu, Long San, and Long Lama, to the competition’s final round.

The closing ceremony at the Borneo Cultural Museum was presided over by the Deputy Minister of Education, Innovation and Talent Development, Datuk Dr. Annuar Rapa’ee, and Khairool Adzelan, representing the Chief Executive Officer of the Sarawak Digital Economy Corporation (SEDC).

The SSC remains a pivotal initiative for enabling youth to practically apply STEM skills, thereby preparing them to spearhead Sarawak’s advancement in the digital age.
