St. Stephen Bau Church Upgrade Project Set for Completion in June 2026

BAU – The upgrading of St. Stephen Bau Church is moving ahead as planned, with completion targeted for June 2026. The works include installing air conditioning and aluminium windows to improve comfort and modernise the building.

The project began in December 2025 and is carried out by the Sarawak Public Works Department (JKR). It is funded with RM801,000 under the Greater Kuching Development Coordination Agency (GKCDA).

Henry Harry Jinep, Sarawak Deputy Minister of Transport (Rivers and Marine) and Tasik Biru assemblyman, visited the site on Thursday to review progress.

He reaffirmed his commitment to seeing the project through on schedule and pointed out several matters that require attention to prevent delays.

The upgrade forms part of the state’s wider effort to improve community infrastructure, including religious and cultural institutions. Improved facilities support congregational activities and ensure safer, more comfortable spaces for worship.

Also present during the inspection were Bau District Officer Eddy Nayoi, Sandra Jujane Jutim from JKR Kuching representing GKCDA, and Fr. Peter Liston, Rector of St. Stephen Bau. Their presence reflected close coordination between government agencies, local authorities and church leaders.

Once completed, the upgraded church is expected to serve parishioners better while continuing its role as a centre for faith and community life in Bau.
