MIRI – The STEM Trailblazers 2025 programme has once again proven to be a catalyst for cultivating innovation, creativity, and critical thinking among young Sarawakians, according to the Minister of Education, Innovation and Talent Development, Dato Sri Roland Sagah Wee Inn.
Speaking during the opening ceremony at Curtin University Malaysia on Friday, Roland described the event as more than just an annual showcase—calling it a “strategic platform” aimed at shaping the future of Sarawak’s next generation in the fields of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM).
“This programme is a platform that fuels the culture of innovation, learning, and creativity among students throughout the state,” he said.
The 2025 edition received an overwhelming response with 157 team entries, significantly exceeding the initial target of 91, including 28 additional submissions—a testament to the growing enthusiasm among Sarawakian youth for STEM-related activities.
The two-day programme features a range of hands-on workshops and competitions designed to foster collaboration and imaginative problem-solving. Students will explore emerging fields such as artificial intelligence, green technology, and robotics, providing them with real-world exposure to innovative sectors.
Dato Sri Roland also highlighted several long-term educational initiatives led by his ministry to further expand STEM education across all segments of society. These include:
- STEM Catalyst Mobile Programme to deliver mobile STEM learning to rural areas
- Sarawak Education Enhancement Programme (SEEP), which offers free tuition for Form 3 and Form 5 students in STEM subjects
- The launch of the Free Tertiary Education Scheme (FTES) starting next year
“These initiatives support our mission under the Post-COVID-19 Development Strategy (PCDS) 2030 to establish Sarawak as a knowledge-based economy built on a skilled and innovative workforce,” he explained.
Also present at the opening ceremony was Deputy Minister of Education, Innovation and Talent Development of Sarawak, Datuk Francis Harden Hollis, alongside educators, students, and partners from across the state.
STEM Trailblazers 2025 continues to position Sarawak as a leader in educational innovation, ensuring its youth are well-prepared to thrive in a fast-evolving global landscape.
