KUCHING – The Storyteller Journey Programme has reached Kuching, offering young children an engaging introduction to the joy of reading.
Organised in collaboration with the Sarawak Storytellers Association, the initiative is held in conjunction with the nationwide Jom Baca Bersama 2026 campaign.
The programme, which runs from 13 to 17 April, is visiting 11 selected kindergartens across the city. On its third day, Tadika Methodist Pending hosted the event, where children enjoyed interactive storytelling sessions designed to spark imagination and curiosity.
The initiative is part of a wider effort to nurture a reading culture among children from an early age. Organisers highlighted that storytelling not only entertains but also helps develop language skills, creativity, and confidence.
By combining fun activities with educational value, the programme aims to make reading a habit that extends beyond the classroom.
A key feature of the programme is the distribution of storybooks from Pustaka Negeri Sarawak. Each child receives a book to take home, serving both as a souvenir and as encouragement to continue reading with their families.
Organisers believe that involving parents in the process is crucial to sustaining interest in reading and building stronger family bonds through shared learning.
The Storyteller Journey Programme also reflects Sarawak’s broader commitment to promoting literacy and lifelong learning.
By aligning with the Jom Baca Bersama initiative, the organisers are contributing to national efforts to strengthen reading habits across communities.
Stakeholders from the education sector have welcomed the programme, noting that such initiatives complement formal teaching by providing children with memorable experiences.
Teachers at participating kindergartens expressed optimism that the sessions would inspire children to explore books more actively.
With several more kindergartens scheduled to host the programme before it concludes on 17 April, organisers are confident that the initiative will leave a lasting impact.
The combination of storytelling, interactive engagement, and family involvement is expected to reinforce the importance of reading as a foundation for lifelong learning.
