11 Motorcycles Seized in Kuching Street Racing Crackdown

KUCHING — Police in Kuching have stepped up efforts to combat illegal street racing, seizing 11 modified motorcycles and issuing 65 traffic summonses during a large-scale joint operation over the weekend.

Kuching District Police Chief, ACP Alexson Naga Chabu, said the operation was part of a continuing initiative to address public safety concerns caused by reckless motorcyclists and illegal racing on city roads.

According to Alexson, 40 individuals and 34 motorcycles were checked during the operation which took place from 10.00 pm on July 19 until 6.00 am on July 20. The 11 motorcycles seized were found to have undergone modifications that violated the original factory specifications, and were seized under Section 60 of the Road Transport Act 1987.

“This operation was carried out at several known hotspots including Jalan Tun Abdul Rahman Yakob, Jalan Astana, and the Masja area,” he said in a press statement.

The operation involved cooperation from several agencies — the Sarawak Contingent Traffic Investigation and Enforcement Department (JSPT IPK Sarawak), Kuching District Traffic Investigation and Enforcement Division (IPD Kuching), and officers from the Department of Environment (DOE).

DOE enforcement also played a role by issuing compounds to six motorcyclists for using modified exhaust systems that exceeded noise limits.

A total of four senior police officers and 44 personnel, along with one DOE officer and four of their enforcement team members, took part in the crackdown, which targeted illegal modifications and dangerous driving practices.

Alexson emphasized that such integrated enforcement operations will continue from time to time to ensure that all road users follow the law and keep roads safe for everyone.

“We urge all motorists, especially the youth, to avoid street racing and not endanger their lives and others on the road. Drive responsibly and obey traffic rules,” he added.
