Sultan Nazrin Urges Action on MKI Resolutions, PM Anwar Reaffirms

KUALA LUMPUR – The 74th Meeting of the National Council for Islamic Religious Affairs Malaysia (MKI) was convened today under the chairmanship of His Majesty Sultan Nazrin Muizzuddin Shah of Perak, with discussions centred on strengthening the governance of Islamic affairs across the nation.

During the session, Sultan Nazrin emphasised the importance of ensuring that resolutions passed by the council are not left as mere recommendations but are followed through with concrete action. He highlighted that both federal and state administrations must treat the council’s conclusions with seriousness, giving them meaningful value rather than allowing them to remain symbolic.

The Sultan, who has chaired MKI for two years, noted that numerous issues have been deliberated and presented to the Conference of Rulers. He stressed that the council should not be seen solely as a platform for debate but as a body whose decisions require implementation to benefit the Muslim community.

Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, who attended the meeting, reaffirmed the government’s commitment to inclusive and effective governance of Islamic affairs under the Malaysia MADANI framework. He stated that the administration would continue to strengthen leadership accountability, empower education, and ensure sound management of religious matters.

“His Majesty’s guidance and advice, which emphasised leadership accountability, the empowerment of education and sound governance of Islamic affairs, are deeply meaningful and should be collectively embraced as we face current challenges,” Anwar said.

The Prime Minister added that the MADANI Government’s approach is anchored in the Federal Constitution and shaped by values of inclusivity and cooperation. He explained that consultative engagement between federal and state authorities remains vital to safeguarding the wellbeing of Muslims while maintaining harmony in Malaysia’s diverse society.

The MKI, established to coordinate Islamic affairs nationally, plays a crucial role in aligning policies between the federal government and individual states. Its deliberations cover matters such as religious education, administration of mosques, and broader issues affecting the Muslim community.

Observers note that the Sultan’s call for stronger follow-up reflects growing concerns that resolutions risk losing impact if not acted upon. The emphasis on implementation is seen as a reminder to government agencies to ensure that decisions made at the council translate into tangible outcomes.

The meeting also underscored the spirit of consensus, with participants recognising the importance of unity in addressing contemporary challenges. The collaborative tone highlighted Malaysia’s ongoing effort to balance religious governance with the realities of a multicultural society.

As Malaysia continues to navigate modern pressures, the MKI’s role remains central in shaping policies that uphold Islamic values while fostering national cohesion. The government’s pledge to act on the Sultan’s counsel signals a renewed determination to ensure that Islamic affairs are managed inclusively and effectively for the long-term wellbeing of the people.
