DUNGUN, June 6 — A 57-year-old woman suffered serious injuries after a sports utility vehicle (SUV) she was travelling in skidded off the East Coast Highway 2 (LPT2) near the Paka Rest and Treatment Stop (R&R) here on Saturday evening.
The victim sustained a severe injury to her left leg during the accident, which occurred at Kilometre 341.5 of the highway while the vehicle was travelling from Kuala Terengganu towards Kuantan, Pahang.
According to Senior Fire Officer II (PBK II) and Operations Commander Nor Hazamullah Abdullah, the Fire and Rescue Department received an emergency distress call at 5.41pm regarding the incident.
Following the report, a team of seven firefighters along with a fire engine was immediately dispatched to the scene to carry out rescue operations.
Upon arrival, rescue personnel found a Proton X70 SUV that had skidded off the road. The vehicle was carrying five occupants comprising one man and four women at the time of the accident.
Nor Hazamullah said firefighters quickly assessed the situation and worked to safely remove the injured victim from the vehicle. The woman was found to have suffered a serious injury to her left leg and required immediate medical attention.
“The victim was successfully removed by firefighters before being handed over to medical personnel for further treatment,” he said when contacted.
Police officers and medical responders also arrived at the scene to assist with the emergency operation and manage the situation.
The exact cause of the accident has yet to be determined. Authorities are expected to conduct further investigations to establish the circumstances that led to the vehicle skidding off the highway.
Road accidents involving loss of vehicle control continue to be a concern on major highways, particularly during periods of heavy traffic and changing weather conditions. Motorists are constantly reminded to remain alert, observe speed limits and ensure their vehicles are in good condition before beginning long-distance journeys.
The rescue operation was completed after the victim was safely transferred to medical personnel and the scene was secured by the relevant authorities.
Investigations into the incident are ongoing.
