Teenager Killed in Motorcycle-Lorry Crash at Jalan Airport, Miri

MIRI – A teenage motorcyclist lost his life in a tragic accident involving a rigid lorry at Jalan Airport here this morning.

Miri District Police Chief, Assistant Commissioner Mohd Farhan Lee Abdullah, said the victim, aged 18, was confirmed dead at the scene after his motorcycle collided with the back of a lorry that had stopped at a red traffic light.

“The accident occurred at about 10.15 am. Early investigations showed that the victim, who was riding alone, failed to stop in time and crashed into the rear of the lorry. The impact caused serious injuries, leading to his death on the spot,” he said in a statement issued this evening.

He added that the lorry was driven by a 44-year-old local man who was unharmed in the incident. The case is being investigated under Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987 for causing death by reckless or dangerous driving.

ACP Mohd Farhan urged members of the public who witnessed the incident to step forward and assist in the investigation. Witnesses may contact Traffic Investigating Officer Inspector Mohd Faizbul Ab. Rahim at 014-858 2582 or 085-430 479, or provide information at the nearest police station.

The remains of the victim have been sent to Miri Hospital for a post-mortem examination.

This accident has once again highlighted the importance of road safety awareness among young riders. Police have reminded all road users, especially motorcyclists, to stay alert, maintain a safe distance from heavy vehicles, and adhere to traffic signals to prevent similar tragedies.
