Tragic Crash in Belaga: Driver Dies, 5 Hurt as 4WD Falls into Ravine

BELAGA, SARAWAK – A tragic road accident took place along Jalan Jiwa Murni in Belaga yesterday, claiming the life of a 48-year-old man and injuring five others.

The victim, identified as Wielie Blata, died after the four-wheel drive (4WD) vehicle he was driving skidded and plunged into a 15-metre deep ravine. The accident occurred around 4.15pm, prompting a swift emergency response.

The Sarawak Fire and Rescue Department (JBPM) said they received an alert and immediately dispatched a team from the Belaga Fire and Rescue Station (BBP) to the scene, located about 42 kilometres from the station.

When rescuers arrived, they found a Toyota Prado 4WD had fallen into the ravine. Six adults were involved — three men and three women. Four of the victims were already rescued by members of the public and brought to the Belaga Health Clinic for treatment.

Another woman, who had serious head injuries, had to be rescued using a scoop stretcher by the fire brigade team. She was later handed over to Ministry of Health (MOH) officers for further medical attention.

Sadly, the driver was trapped under the overturned vehicle. Firefighters had to use special equipment to pull the vehicle and free the victim. He was later handed over to the police and taken to Bintulu Hospital, where he was confirmed dead by MOH officers.

Authorities are still investigating the cause of the accident. The public is reminded to drive carefully, especially on rural roads that are narrow and winding.

This tragic incident highlights the importance of road safety and vehicle maintenance, especially in remote areas like Belaga.
