KUCHING – The Tung Fatt Lion Dance Association has been selected as one of the teams representing Sarawak at the 21st Genting National Lion Dance Championship – East Malaysia Regional Competition.
The event will take place on 24 May 2026 at the Tawau Community Hall in Sabah, bringing together top lion dance performers from across the region.
Dato Wee Hong Seng, Mayor of Kuching South, extended his congratulations to the team, praising their discipline, dedication, and commitment to preserving Sarawak’s cultural identity through the art of lion dance.
He emphasised that their participation reflects teamwork and perseverance, while also highlighting the importance of safeguarding traditional heritage for future generations.
Dato Wee noted that lion dance is more than a cultural performance. It has become an integral part of the creative and cultural industries, linking performing arts with tourism, event entertainment, youth development, and heritage presentation.
He explained that lion dance continues to play a vital role in community celebrations, cultural festivals, tourism events, and international exchanges, bridging tradition with modern creative industries.
Despite facing challenges in training facilities, the Tung Fatt Lion Dance Association has shown determination in preparing for the competition.
Dato Wee revealed that the team currently lacks a proper venue for practice. To support their efforts, Kuching South City Council (MBKS) has allowed the association to use the Dewan Masyarakat MBKS car park area as a temporary training ground.
This gesture reflects MBKS’s commitment to supporting cultural and sports-related community activities, particularly those involving youth and heritage preservation.
Dato Wee also highlighted Kuching’s recognition as a UNESCO Creative City of Gastronomy, noting that the city continues to support cultural and creative activities that foster community unity, talent development, and the promotion of Sarawak’s multicultural identity.
He expressed confidence that the Tung Fatt Lion Dance Association will perform with pride and professionalism while carrying Sarawak’s flag at the regional competition.
In his closing remarks, Dato Wee wished the team success and encouraged them to embody the spirit of “Sarawak Boleh” throughout the championship.
The participation of the Tung Fatt Lion Dance Association not only strengthens Sarawak’s presence in national competitions but also showcases the state’s rich cultural heritage on a wider stage.
