Ankara / Kyiv — Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan has declared that Türkiye is ready to host a high-level peace summit aimed at facilitating an end to the war in Ukraine. Erdoğan made the announcement following a phone call with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, during which working groups in military, humanitarian, and political areas were proposed to lay the groundwork for the summit.
Erdoğan underscored the importance of previous diplomatic progress, notably the direct Russia–Ukraine talks held in Istanbul, as a constructive precedent. He reaffirmed Ankara’s commitment to Ukraine’s sovereignty and territorial integrity, while warning that any negotiations excluding Kyiv would lack enduring legitimacy.
President Zelenskyy echoed this sentiment, emphasizing that sustainable peace cannot be forged without Ukraine at the table. The two leaders also discussed cooperation for upcoming events during the UN General Assembly, including ensuring Turkey’s participation.
Türkiye’s readiness to act as a neutral mediator is rooted in its history of facilitating diplomacy—organizing significant peace talks in Istanbul earlier in the conflict, brokering a grain export deal, and arranging prisoner exchanges.
