Arrest Made Following Swift Police Action
KUCHING: Two men believed to be involved in a vehicle theft case in the Bintawa area on May 17 were successfully arrested by the police here on Wednesday.
Kuching District Police Deputy Chief Superintendent Merbin Lisa confirmed the arrests, stating that the suspects, aged 23 and 29, were apprehended in Semariang by a team from the Aggressive Counter Team (CAT), Kuching District Police Headquarters (IPD) after receiving credible information.
Details of the Theft and Arrest
The vehicle theft incident led to a loss of approximately RM5,000 for the victim. During the operation, the police confiscated a motorcycle, an air rifle, clothing, and vehicle theft equipment.
Superintendent Merbin Lisa elaborated, “In the operation, the police also confiscated a motorcycle, along with an air rifle, clothes, and vehicle theft equipment.”
Suspects’ Criminal Background
Preliminary investigations revealed that the suspects each have prior records. One suspect has four previous arrests, while the other has eight, all related to drug abuse and other crimes.
“Both suspects were also found to be positive for Amphetamine and Methamphetamine,” the Superintendent added.
Legal Proceedings and Public Appeal
The suspects are currently remanded for four days until June 10, 2024, to facilitate further investigation, including determining their involvement in other criminal activities. The case is being investigated under Section 379A of the Penal Code, which carries a prison sentence of one to seven years and a possible fine.
Superintendent Merbin Lisa urged the public to assist in crime prevention efforts. “The police are calling on members of the public to pass on any crime-related information by contacting the IPD Kuching control center at 082-244444 or at the nearest police station.”
