DEBAK – Smallholder palm oil farmers in the Nanga Lop area have gained significantly improved access to their plantations following the successful completion of a major road upgrading project.
The initiative, funded through the Betong Division Development Agency (BDDA), aims to enhance the safety and efficiency of agricultural transport in the rural locality.
The infrastructure works were executed by the Betong Division Public Works Department (JKR), which served as the implementing agency for the scheme.
The project was delivered in strict adherence to the technical specifications and timeline established during the planning phase.
Following its completion, the upgraded road was formally handed over to the local community in a ceremony held on Wednesday, 29 July.
The handover event saw the participation of key stakeholders involved in the project’s delivery. Representatives included Jordan Ervin from the BDDA, Norasyimah from the Betong JKR, and officials from the service centre of the N.37 Bukit Saban State Assemblyman.
Also present were Tuai Rumah Rayong, representing the local longhouse community, and representatives from the contracting firm, Mahda Enterprise, which carried out the physical construction works.
Sarawak Deputy Premier and Bukit Saban Assemblyman, Datuk Amar Douglas Uggah Embas, emphasised that the provision of high-quality rural infrastructure remains a top priority for the state government.
He noted that such developments are essential for supporting the growth of the agricultural sector and elevating the living standards of rural populations.
“Good plantation roads have a direct impact on the productivity of smallholders. When access is improved, the process of bringing out palm oil products becomes easier, faster and safer, thus reducing transportation costs and helping to increase their income,” he said.
The Deputy Premier highlighted that the realisation of this project demonstrates the government’s commitment to delivering facilities that address the genuine needs of rural communities.
By improving logistical links, the administration aims to bolster local economic activities and ensure that farmers can operate more competitively.
He further urged the community to take ownership of the new asset to ensure its longevity. “I hope that these facilities are utilised and maintained to the best of their ability so that their benefits can be enjoyed continuously.
Cooperation from all parties is very important to ensure that each project implemented truly achieves its goals for the well-being of the people,” he added.
Local leadership expressed strong satisfaction with the outcome of the upgrading works. Tuai Rumah Rayong conveyed his appreciation to Datuk Amar Douglas Uggah Embas for securing the necessary allocation through the BDDA.
He noted that the quality of the construction has met expectations and will greatly assist residents in their daily activities.
The improved road network is expected to facilitate smoother movement for smallholders and streamline the transportation of fresh fruit bunches to processing mills.
Reduced travel time and lower vehicle wear and tear are anticipated to result in tangible financial benefits for the farmers.
This development aligns with the broader strategy of the Sarawak Government to strengthen rural infrastructure across the state.
By focusing on critical access routes in constituencies such as Bukit Saban, the administration seeks to create a more conducive environment for agricultural development.
