KLANG, SELANGOR — Universiti Putra Malaysia Sarawak (UPMS) has been formally proclaimed as a full-fledged institution, positioning itself as a catalyst for agricultural innovation and renewable energy development in alignment with Sarawak’s Post-COVID-19 Development Strategy (PCDS) 2030.
Sarawak Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri (Dr) Abang Abdul Rahman Zohari Tun Datuk Abang Openg emphasized at Monday’s proclamation ceremony that UPMS will spearhead sustainable agriculture and food security initiatives through strategic state-university partnerships. “The rollout of projects focused on sustainable agricultural innovation addresses critical needs at state, national, and global levels,” he stated at Istana Alam Shah.
A cornerstone initiative is the newly established School of Veterinary and Animal Sciences (SVAS), jointly developed by the Sarawak Government and UPMS. The Premier confirmed continuous state funding for SVAS, noting: “This school creates opportunities for Sarawakian youth in veterinary studies while strengthening livestock industry sustainability and animal health standards.”
The rebranding from UPM Bintulu Campus to UPMS recognizes the institution’s strategic role in Borneo and demonstrates the government’s commitment to equitable higher education development in East Malaysia.
His Royal Highness Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah Alhaj, Sultan of Selangor and UPM Chancellor, officiated the proclamation. Attendees included Sarawak Governor Tun Pehin Sri Dr Wan Junaidi Tuanku Jaafar, Higher Education Minister Dato’ Seri Diraja Dr Zambry Abd Kadir, and multiple Sarawak state ministers.
