KUCHING, 21 April – The Borneo Mazu Cultural Festival came to a successful close last night at the Tiong Hock Kiong temple, drawing a large and enthusiastic crowd. Organised by the temple committee, the event was a celebration of tradition, faith, and community spirit.
The closing ceremony was graced by Dato David Teng Lung Chi, President of the Sarawak Cultural Research Institute Society, who attended as the guest of honour. His presence lent significance to the event, reflecting the importance of cultural preservation in Sarawak.
Cr. Wung Duk Ying, Chairman of the SUPP Kuching Branch Youth Section, was also present. In his heartfelt speech, he shared inspiring stories about Mazu – the revered sea goddess worshipped by many Chinese communities across Asia. One powerful tale described how young Mazu entered a deep meditative state and spiritually sensed her father and brother were in danger at sea. With her divine intervention, she managed to save her brother. This story moved the audience, showcasing Mazu’s wisdom, compassion, and the core values she represents.

To further enliven the night, local favourites “THE 8” Live Band delivered a captivating performance, adding energy and excitement to the celebration. Their presence made the event feel not only like a cultural gathering but also a joyous community concert.
The SUPP Kuching Branch, led by Women’s Chief Chai Mian Nyen, also set up a community service counter during the festival. The booth provided useful consultations on government welfare assistance and support services. Several community leaders from different zones were involved, making the engagement more personal and helpful to attendees.
Overall, the festival was a beautiful blend of faith, tradition, and public service, highlighting the importance of cultural unity and grassroots involvement. The event served not just as a religious celebration, but as a platform for connecting people, fostering unity, and promoting shared values.
