The event, which is expected to be a major boost for Sarawak’s tourism sector, is poised to offer world-class experiences and help elevate the region’s profile internationally. Dato Sri Tiong, in his speech at the SIPBR 2025 Opening Ceremony, emphasized the importance of making the event a permanent fixture in the international racing calendar.

“This is an incredible opportunity. If we can establish SIPBR as a world-class event in Sibu, it will not only enhance the tourism sector but also attract global attention. I urge all parties, both domestic and international, to collaborate and help promote this event,” said Dato Sri Tiong.

This year, the event includes thrilling Formula 3 and Formula 4 powerboat races, with potential future plans to introduce Formula 1 races if there is sufficient interest and support. “A Formula 1 race would be a fantastic addition to our event lineup, but it requires extensive cooperation from various parties. We need to discuss this proposal with federal authorities,” Tiong added.

In a move to further support the event’s success, the Ministry of Tourism, Arts, and Culture has approved an initial allocation of RM200,000, with the possibility of further funding if necessary. Dato Sri Tiong reassured organizers that additional resources could be provided after consultations.

The event is expected to attract between 10,000 and 20,000 spectators, with a total of 276 boats registered, including teams from neighboring Brunei. Dato Sri Tiong also highlighted the potential for Li Hua Island to become a major water sports hub, with plans for infrastructure development, including the possibility of upgrading the Li Hua Quay to accommodate international-class events.

“We are committed to ensuring that Sibu, and Sarawak at large, becomes a prominent location for water sports and tourism. Developing infrastructure and upgrading key locations like Li Hua Island is a priority,” Tiong stated.

With the success of SIPBR 2025, the event is expected to have a positive impact on the local economy, particularly in Sibu’s Li Hua Island and Dudong areas. Dato Sri Tiong’s vision is clear: to make SIPBR a global event that continues to bring people together for world-class powerboat racing, tourism, and economic growth. — UKAS EDITION
