Officiating the ceremony on behalf of Sarawak Transport Minister and Senadin ADUN Dato Sri Lee Kim Shin was Jeffrey Phang, who read a speech highlighting the event’s greater purpose.

“SOPMA Baton Run is not merely recreational. It’s a symbol of struggle, inspiration and unification for the deaf community and all Malaysians,” said Jeffrey, quoting Dato Sri Lee.

He added that such events encourage a culture of healthy living and boost the self-confidence of the deaf community, particularly in Miri. He praised the athletes with disabilities (OKU) for their unwavering spirit in overcoming challenges and continuing to compete in sports at various levels.

Dato Sri Lee also acknowledged the vital role of NGOs like the Sarawak Deaf Sports Association in advocating for the welfare of marginalised groups and acting as a bridge between communities.

To further support the cause, Dato Sri Lee announced a RM5,000 contribution to the Sarawak Deaf Sports Association to aid in athlete preparation and event organisation.

Organising Chairman Victor Hii noted that the baton run also served to raise funds for training deaf athletes in Sarawak and to boost public awareness about SOPMA and the capabilities of the deaf community.
