SIBU – The Sibu Heritage Centre came alive on Friday evening as the third edition of the WAK Sibu Festival 2026 was officially launched, marking the start of three days of cultural performances, creative showcases, and community-driven activities.
Running from 12 to 14 June, the festival has become a significant platform for promoting Sarawak’s diverse traditions while strengthening grassroots participation in the arts.
This year’s opening ceremony carried the theme “Celebrating Us: The Melanaus,” highlighting the heritage of one of Sarawak’s prominent indigenous communities.
The programme featured traditional music and dance, offering audiences a vivid glimpse into Melanau customs and artistry.
The choice of theme underscored the festival’s commitment to inclusivity and cultural pride, ensuring that local traditions remain visible and celebrated.
The event was officiated by Councillor Michelle Law, who represented the Chairman of the Sibu Municipal Council, Clarence Ting Ing Horh. In her remarks, she emphasised the festival’s role in showcasing Sibu’s creative energy and cultural identity.
“WAK Sibu is not just a festival, it is Sibu’s energy, creativity, and cultural spirit on full display,” she said, noting that the event provides a space for people to connect, relax, and contribute to the town’s creative economy.
The launch was attended by a wide range of guests, including representatives from government agencies, cultural organisations, and academic institutions.
Among them were Mr Nazari Bin Bujang from the Ministry of Tourism, Creative Industry and Performing Arts Sarawak, Madam Norsyahrul Syafsaidatina from the National Department for Culture and Arts (JKKN) Sarawak, and Mr Ivan Sia from the University of Technology Sarawak.
Their presence reflected the collaborative effort between local authorities and cultural stakeholders in supporting the festival.
Following the Melanau showcase, the evening continued with “Citra Malaysia: Colours of Malaysia – Pirin Kamek,” a performance curated by JKKN.
This segment broadened the celebration to include Malaysia’s wider cultural tapestry, blending traditional elements from across the nation into a colourful display of unity and diversity.
Festival Director Donald Tan expressed his appreciation for the collective support that made the event possible.
“It is an honour to see Sibu’s vibrant spirit shine through this festival. We are deeply grateful to Cr Clarence Ting, the Council, and our partners for believing in the power of community-led celebrations. This festival belongs to the people of Sibu,” he said.
The WAK Sibu Festival operates under the guiding principle “By the Community, For the Community,” serving as a satellite edition of the larger WAK Festival.
Its mission is to empower local talent, encourage cross-cultural participation, and contribute to Sarawak’s tourism appeal.
Organisers extended thanks to the Ministry of Tourism, Creative Industry and Performing Arts Sarawak, the Sibu Municipal Council, and the many volunteers, artists, and partners whose contributions ensured the festival’s success.
Over the coming days, visitors can expect a variety of programmes ranging from art exhibitions and performances to lifestyle activities, all designed to highlight Sibu’s creative spirit.
The festival continues to grow as a cornerstone of Sarawak’s cultural calendar, reinforcing the importance of community-led initiatives in sustaining heritage and promoting regional identity.
