MATU – A wasp nest the size of a basketball was successfully removed by the Malaysian Civil Defence Force (APM) in Matu District following an emergency call from residents.
On 12 May 2026, the District Operations Control Centre (PKOD) received a report from a complainant who discovered the nest behind their home at the Dead Federation Flat.
The presence of the nest posed a potential danger to the household and surrounding community, prompting immediate intervention by APM personnel.
Upon arrival, officers inspected the site and confirmed the location of the nest. The team prepared appropriate equipment before commencing the destruction operation.
Using insecticide sprays, including Ridsect and Api, the squad managed to neutralise the wasps and dismantle the nest safely.
The operation was carried out under strict safety measures to prevent harm to residents and personnel. Once completed, the area was declared secure, and no untoward incidents were reported.
The swift response ensured that the risk of stings or allergic reactions among residents was eliminated.
Officials highlighted that wasp nests of this size can pose significant risks, particularly in residential areas. Large colonies are known to become aggressive if disturbed, making professional intervention essential.
The Civil Defence Force continues to remind the public not to attempt removal themselves, as improper handling can lead to serious injury.
Cases of insect nests have been increasingly reported across Sarawak, often linked to weather conditions and vegetation growth near housing estates.
Authorities emphasise that early reporting is crucial, as it allows trained teams to act quickly before the situation escalates.
APM Matu reiterated its commitment to community safety, guided by its operational motto, “Ready Fast with Integrity”.
Officials also encouraged residents to remain vigilant and to contact the Civil Defence Force immediately if similar cases arise.
For emergencies, the public can reach APM Matu’s District Operations Control Centre at 084-832208, which operates 24 hours a day.
The agency continues to stress its message: “There’s a disaster, call APM,” underscoring the importance of community cooperation in safeguarding lives and property.
