KUCHING – More than 150 industry representatives from across Sarawak gathered at the PUSAKA Seminar Hall, Wisma Sumber Alam, for an industry update and dialogue session on 23 April 2026.
The programme focused on regulatory requirements and procedures for recruiting non-Sarawakian workers, aiming to improve transparency and efficiency in workforce management.
The event was jointly organised by the Immigration and Labour Management Unit (ILMU) under the Department of the Premier of Sarawak, together with the Sarawak Timber Industry Development Corporation (STIDC).
It provided a platform for industry players to strengthen their understanding of current regulations while engaging directly with government agencies on workforce governance.
A key highlight of the session was the state’s ongoing digitalisation efforts through the Foreign Workers Transformation Approach (FWTA). Since its launch in January 2025, FWTA has recorded over 10,000 registered companies.
The initiative integrates platforms such as JobSarawak, SANSOLS and EXPRT, streamlining recruitment processes and ensuring compliance with labour standards.
STIDC representatives noted that such initiatives are crucial in bridging the gap between policy and implementation.
They emphasised that responsible and transparent recruitment practices are essential for sustaining Sarawak’s economic growth, particularly as the state moves towards its 2030 development goals.
The dialogue also underscored the importance of collaboration between government agencies and industry stakeholders.
By working together, both sides can address challenges in workforce management while promoting fair and compliant practices.
Officials highlighted that continuous engagement will remain central to strengthening governance and supporting Sarawak’s long-term economic sustainability.
Industry participants welcomed the opportunity to clarify procedures and share feedback, noting that digital platforms have already improved efficiency in recruitment processes.
The FWTA framework was praised for reducing administrative burdens while enhancing accountability.
The session concluded with a call for ongoing cooperation, with organisers reaffirming that workforce governance is a shared responsibility.
By fostering dialogue and adopting digital solutions, Sarawak aims to create a more transparent, efficient and sustainable labour environment that benefits both employers and employees.
