KUCHING, 30 April 2025 — Minister of Women, Family and Community Development, YB Datuk Seri Nancy Shukri, has issued a firm reminder to all Malaysians not to take sexual harassment matters lightly, especially when it involves minors. Her statement came in response to a viral incident involving a 15-year-old girl and an e-hailing driver who allegedly asked the teen to remove her hijab during a ride home.

The disturbing video, which has spread across social media, captured the bravery of the girl’s father, who confronted the driver and insisted on lodging a police report. Nancy praised the father’s action, stating that it shows growing public awareness and refusal to tolerate such behaviour.

“I am seriously following this case. I understand the police are investigating, and we must trust them to act fairly and promptly,” she said in her statement.

Nancy stressed that sexual harassment is not limited to physical acts. Verbal abuse, intimidation, and inappropriate suggestions also fall under this serious offence. She called on all Malaysians — including teenagers — to speak out and take action when facing any form of harassment.

“To the youth: don’t stay silent. You have the right to protect your dignity and safety. I urge everyone — women, men, parents, educators and peers — to be brave and speak up.”

The minister also assured that the government remains committed to empowering victims through the proper channels, including the full implementation of the Tribunal under the Sexual Harassment Act.

Her message is clear: the time has come for Malaysians to stand together and create a safe, dignified environment for all, especially for women and children.
