FUKUSHIMA, JAPAN: More than 100 tourists and staff were left stranded at two hotels in the Tsuchiyu Onsen district, a hot spring resort in Fukushima, following an avalanche early Monday morning. The avalanche, which occurred around 4 a.m., blocked the main access road, cutting off entry and exit for the guests and workers.
Officials reported that the road was initially cleared by 10:20 a.m., but before anyone could leave, a second avalanche hit just before noon, blocking the road again. Thankfully, there were no reports of injuries or anyone trapped in the first avalanche.
The affected hotels include a traditional Japanese inn, a popular spot for tourists seeking an authentic onsen experience. Authorities confirmed that about 160 people were at the hotels when the avalanche struck. Rescue teams have been monitoring the situation closely, and efforts to clear the road and ensure the safety of everyone are ongoing.
The Fukushima region has been experiencing heavy snowfall since last week, contributing to the high avalanche risk. Snowstorms have impacted transportation and daily activities, with local authorities urging caution.
In related news, services on the Yamagata Shinkansen Line, which were previously disrupted after a snowplow derailment, resumed operations Monday morning between Fukushima and Shinjo Stations.
