KUCHING – The Sarawak Premier Cup 2026 is set to bring international junior golf talent to Miri this July, reinforcing the state’s ambition to become a leading sports tourism destination.
A delegation from the Sarawak Golf Association met with Premier of Sarawak, Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri (Dr) Abang Haji Abdul Rahman Zohari bin Tun Abang Haji Openg, on 2 July to present the official trophy ahead of the tournament. The 23rd edition of the championship will take place at Eastwood Valley Golf & Country Club from 13 to 17 July.
The event is expected to draw around 100 junior golfers representing 10 countries, including Indonesia, China, Bangladesh, Thailand, Myanmar, Vietnam, Sri Lanka, Brunei, Malaysia and Singapore.
With participants aged between 8 and 16 years, the competition will be divided into four categories (A, B, C and D), offering a structured platform for young athletes to showcase their skills.
Organisers emphasised that the championship is one of the most prominent junior golf tournaments in the region, providing opportunities for emerging players to gain international exposure.
The Sarawak Golf Association highlighted that the state government continues to support such initiatives, recognising their role in promoting sports tourism and raising the competitive standards of local athletes.
Sports tourism has been identified as a key growth sector for Sarawak, with events like the Premier Cup contributing to the state’s reputation as a hub for international competitions.
The Ministry of Tourism, Creative Industry and Performing Arts Sarawak has partnered with organisers to strengthen the impact of these events, ensuring that they benefit both the sporting community and the wider economy.
Eastwood Valley Golf & Country Club, known for its challenging course and scenic landscape, has hosted numerous prestigious tournaments in the past.
Its selection as the venue for the Premier Cup underscores Sarawak’s readiness to host international sporting events that attract visitors from across Asia.
The Premier Cup not only provides a competitive stage for junior golfers but also serves as a cultural exchange, bringing together young athletes from diverse backgrounds. This aligns with Sarawak’s broader vision of fostering inclusivity and global connections through sport.
