MIRI: A 62-year-old elderly woman lost her life after being hit by a vehicle while crossing Jalan Miri – Airport last night. The tragic incident occurred at around 7.30pm and involved a Toyota Fortuner sports utility vehicle (SUV) driven by a 42-year-old man.

Miri District Police Chief, Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) Alexson Naga Chabu, confirmed the accident, stating that the driver was on his way back to Luak when the pedestrian suddenly crossed the road.

“The accident caused the pedestrian to die at the scene while the driver did not suffer any injuries. The vehicle sustained damage to the front,” he said in a statement today.

Authorities have launched an investigation into the case under Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987, which deals with causing death by reckless or dangerous driving.

The tragic accident serves as a grim reminder for both pedestrians and motorists to exercise extra caution, especially on busy roads during nighttime hours. Pedestrians are urged to use designated crossings whenever possible, while drivers must remain vigilant to prevent such unfortunate incidents.

Further investigations are ongoing, and authorities have called on witnesses to come forward with any information that could assist in the case.
