KUCHING, 1 May 2025 – A 15-year-old girl in Kuching has bravely come forward to report a case of alleged sexual harassment involving an e-hailing driver. The incident reportedly took place along Jalan Camar while the teenager was being driven home.
According to Kuching District Police Chief ACP Alexson Naga Chabu, police have received the report and are investigating under Section 298 and Section 509 of the Penal Code. These laws relate to insulting behaviour and words intended to outrage modesty, both carrying serious penalties including jail time or fines.
A short 12-second video of the incident, which went viral on social media, shows the driver asking the teenager to remove her hijab. When she questioned him, he replied he “just wanted to see her face.” The girl bravely refused, saying she could not expose her aurat. Another video clip showed the suspect being confronted and caught by the victim’s family.
Despite being confronted by the girl’s father and asked about his inappropriate request, the driver showed no guilt. Instead, he threatened to sue those who recorded and shared the video.
Minister of Women, Family and Community Development, Datuk Seri Nancy Shukri, has praised the teenager for her courage.
“I urge all Malaysians, especially our youth, to speak up against sexual harassment. You have the right to protect your dignity and safety,” she said. She also affirmed her commitment to implementing the Sexual Harassment Act and ensuring justice through the newly formed Tribunal for Sexual Harassment.
