In a significant enhancement to its AI chatbot capabilities, Google has updated its Gemini platform to allow users to upload up to 10 images or files per prompt. This update, rolled out on May 6, 2025, is available across Android, iOS, and the web, and applies to all current Gemini models, including 2.0 Flash, 2.5 Flash, and 2.5 Pro.
Previously, Gemini users were restricted to a single image per prompt, with attempts to add another prompting a message to replace the existing file. The new feature streamlines the process, enabling users to select multiple images directly from their device’s gallery or file directory. On mobile devices, users can utilize the system gallery or Gemini’s built-in camera to capture and upload images seamlessly.
Web users accessing gemini.google.com can also benefit from this improvement. However, uploads are limited to 10 images per session, with any attempt to exceed this limit resulting in a notification indicating that only 10 attachments can be uploaded at a time.
Josh Woodward, Vice President of Google Labs and Gemini, announced the update via a post on X (formerly Twitter), stating:
“Papercut fixed: @GeminiApp now lets you upload multiple files at the same time. Sorry, we didn’t have this before—if you see other little annoying things like this, drop them here! We’ll aim to fix the most common things that cause grumpiness.”
This enhancement is particularly beneficial for users seeking responses to queries involving multiple files or images, such as comparing documents or analysing a series of photos. While similar tasks could previously be accomplished via NotebookLM or by creating Gems, the integration of this feature into the primary interface simplifies the process, especially for quick or one-off questions.
The update positions Gemini more competitively in the multimodal AI space, aligning its capabilities with those of other AI platforms that support multiple image uploads. As Google continues to refine Gemini’s features, users can expect further improvements aimed at enhancing the overall user experience.
For users who do not yet see the multi-image upload feature, it may be necessary to force stop and restart the Gemini app to access the new functionality.
