Sarawak's Child Recognition System Simplifies Applications for Bumiputera Status

Sarawak’s Child Recognition System Simplifies Applications for Bumiputera Status

MIRI: The Sarawak State Child Recognition System (SARAS), launched in September 2024, marks a major step towards a more transparent, efficient, and people-friendly process for applying for Bumiputera recognition in the state.

Deputy Minister in Sarawak’s Premier Department (Labour, Immigration and Project Monitoring), Datuk Gerawat Gala, said the system resolves long-standing issues surrounding eligibility for Sarawak state child status, which previously hindered many citizens from receiving rightful recognition.

“Before the constitutional amendment, many missed out on the opportunity to be recognized as citizens of the state due to such a ‘rigid’ definition.
With the revision and implementation of SARAS, the application process will be easier, fair and transparent, in accordance with the law and the interests of the people of Sarawak,”
Datuk Gerawat Gala

He made these remarks during the Ceremony of Presentation of the Certificates of Recognition for the Miri Division held at the Miri Resident Office on Tuesday.

A total of 106 individuals received their Bumiputera Sarawak recognition certificates, involving residents from the Miri, Marudi, and Beluru districts.

Who Is Eligible?

To qualify under SARAS:

  • The applicant must be a Malaysian citizen.
  • At least one biological parent must be originally from Sarawak.
  • Adopted children are not eligible for this recognition.

How to Apply

Applications can be made online through the Sarawak Official Portal (SARAS) starting 2 September 2024.

Processing Fee: RM100

This digitalised process is part of the state’s broader effort to ensure equal rights and streamlined governance for all Sarawakians.
