77-Year-Old Limbang Fisherman Survives Two Hours at Sea Clinging to Gallon

77-Year-Old Limbang Fisherman Survives Two Hours at Sea Clinging to Gallon

LIMBANG – A veteran fisherman from Kampung Seberang Kedai, Limbang, had a narrow escape after strong waves capsized his boat in Kuala Limbang waters near the Brunei border last Thursday morning.

Tahir Simin, 77, who has been fishing for more than 50 years, had gone out to sea after Subuh prayers as part of his routine. Unfortunately, unstable weather and a sudden storm turned his usual trip into a life-threatening ordeal.

Recounting the terrifying moment, Tahir said, “The sky was still dark, and the wind was getting stronger. I had already thrown three nets into the water when my boat was suddenly hit by big waves.”

Despite his efforts to steer his boat towards Kuala Limbang, it couldn’t withstand the powerful waves and eventually sank. Without any life jacket, Tahir relied on a single empty plastic gallon — commonly used for storing fuel — to stay afloat.

“I swam and drifted while holding on to the gallon. I floated for more than two hours, heading towards the Sultan Haji Omar ‘Ali Saifuddien Bridge. Thankfully, the Brunei police found and rescued me,” he said.

After his dramatic rescue, Tahir was brought to Muara, Brunei, by the Bruneian authorities. The Malaysian Embassy assisted him in preparing emergency travel documents, and he was safely returned home via Brunei’s Temburong District.

Tahir’s survival is nothing short of a miracle and serves as a strong reminder to local fishermen about the dangers of going out to sea during uncertain weather. His story has touched many, especially in Limbang, where he is well known as a seasoned and respected fisherman.
