KUCHING – In a strong move to safeguard public health and ensure compliance with anti-smoking laws, the Kuching Division Health Office, through its Inspectorate and Legal Unit, has conducted enforcement operations under the Control of Tobacco Product and Smoking Act 2004 (Act 852) in key hotspot areas around Matang.
The operations targeted areas such as Metrocity, Matang Jaya, Matang Mall, and Emart Matang — all of which were identified based on increasing public complaints about smokers flouting regulations in designated no-smoking zones.
According to a statement from the Kuching Division Health Office (PKB Kuching), this initiative responds directly to public feedback, particularly from social media platforms. “We hear our followers,” said a spokesperson, encouraging the public to continue highlighting smoker hotspots in the comments for further investigation.
Firm Action for the Sake of Public Health
The enforcement teams conducted thorough inspections of eateries and public spaces. Those caught smoking in prohibited areas may face fines of up to RM250.
PKB Kuching emphasised that enforcement is a last resort after continuous awareness campaigns and warnings have been issued. The operation aims to prevent health risks such as cancer, chronic lung diseases, and the harmful effects of second-hand smoke.

The public is urged to adopt a healthy lifestyle and actively participate in maintaining a clean, smoke-free environment. “We are not just protecting ourselves — we’re protecting our families, children, and the elderly,” the spokesperson added.
